Over the first weekend in March, the Newport Aquatic Center traveled to Oakland, California to compete in their first race of Crew Spring Season.  The Newport Aquatic Center offers positions on the high school team to students from all nearby high schools, therefore several Newport Harbor students, male or female, novice or varsity, compete on the rowing team.

In the Men’s Varsity 8 boat, NHHS senior coxswain Mac Dafferner led her boat consisting of Harbor students, seniors Gordon Lewis, Tavish Lehman, Kyle Flagg and Brandon Metzger and junior Kurtis Vutborg to a 4th place position.  While this was not the outcome they had hoped for, they gained a personal victory in completing their two-kilometer race in under six minutes.

In the Women’s Varsity 8 Boat, senior and team captain Jamie Darling is the only Newport Harbor student.  Most of the girls in that boat attend CdM High School.  Crew is one of the only sports where the battle of the bay rivalry is nonexistent and Harbor works with CdM for success.  They placed an unfortunate last place in the majority of their races, which will result in a revamping and new approach of training techniques.
This weekend both the NAC’s Men and Women’s teams will be competing in Long Beach against other aquatic centers from Long Beach, San Diego and Marina.
